Salon booth for rentWhat is a salon booth rent?

There are two answers to this question, the traditional way and the new way.

Traditionally, a booth rental is a salon business model in which two parties directly benefit from the arrangement. A stylist leases salon space to provide hair services, and the salon owner receives income from the temporary tenant. The stylist pays a fixed recurring fee and/or a percentage of their sales. This arrangement benefits both parties because it can reduce costs and add revenue for both the stylist and the owner.

The new way involves a stylist leasing a salon suite (salon booth) in a building which has all suites leased by independent business owners (stylists). The stylists/owners pay a rental fee but none of their profits at all. They are, in every way, independent business owners.

Savings mean profits.

Working for commissions or keeping 100% of the profits? This, then, is the question one faces.  Approximately a 40% commission or 100% of the profits? There is no doubt, when stated that way, which is better for the stylist. Having said that, the savings is even greater using this new business model.  Usually, the building owner will offer amenities which are included in the rental price, amenities like free utilities, free Wi-Fi, free web page, etc., and those amenities can oftentimes save another $300-$500 per month in overhead costs.

All of this leaves one with an important question: if a salon booth rental is so great, using this new business model, why would anyone work a traditional gig in an established beauty salon? Why give up earnings potential as illustrated in this new business mode?

Is it right for you?

The answer to that question is a simple one: not all people are cut out to be business owners. There is a risk involved in owning a business. You have no safety net. You have no guaranteed income.  You may very well have slow months where you might not meet your overhead expenses. There might be a severe downturn in the economy which will directly affect your earnings.  In addition, the first-time owner will be facing decisions on marketing, on management, on accounting, all new and all slightly frightening.

Some people sleep better knowing they have a steady income they can count on rather than an iffy income which is affected by so many factors, and that is perfectly all right.  It is vitally important that you have a sit-down conversation with yourself and that you ask yourself tough questions.

If the answer is yes, I have what it takes to own a salon, we highly recommend that you find a rental company like our own Hill Country Salon Suites.
