What is a hair salon?

In the old days they would have been called barber shops for men and a beauty salon for women. Today, for the most part, they are simply hair salons, businesses where customers can go to get their hair cut and styled.

Typically, a hair salon consists of a reception desk, a waiting area, and multiple “workstations” beyond that desk where multiple hair stylists work on customers.  This has been the business model, in the United States, since 1900.

About 15-20 years ago, the business model began to change.  A new idea hit the market, and that idea consisted of shrinking down the traditional business model; instead of hair salons being in a building, this new model had small hair salons, one or two rooms, operated by one or two hair professionals, and many of those salons occupying salon suites in one central building.  In other words, in a business like Hill Country Salon Suites, there are twenty-six salon suites, each one leased by a different person, twenty-six independent businesses all operating under one roof.

Why?

Affordability!

What do you need to open a hair studio?

In the old business model, one would need to lease or purchase a retail building.  After that one would need signage, furnishings, product to sell, pay to have utilities hooked up, insurance, and some sort of marketing/advertising.  Needless to say, this business model is expensive to get off the ground, easily ten-grand, or more, in opening expenses.

Using the salon suite business model, the expenses are proportionally lower. We have had clients who have opened for business by spending only a few hundred dollars and, it should be noted, this smaller business model is rapidly displacing the traditional model simply because it is much more affordable.

Do you have what it takes to own a business?

Cost aside, an important question which needs to be asked, and answered, is this one: do you have what it takes to be a business owner? You not only need existing, loyal customers, but you also need the temperament to handle the pressures of owning a business. You need to be comfortable in making tough decisions.  You need to be secure enough to work without a financial safety net, and confident enough to plow through the tough times and come out the other end.

Not everyone can own a business, and the old adage “just because you can does not mean you should” certainly applies to business ownership.

Our advice, if you believe you have what it takes to own a hair salon, or nail salon suite, or beauty salon, start small and grow into success.  Small means less risk; small means less pressure; and small means a much better chance of success.
